SEA DOGS SIGN ZACK PHILLIPS
SAINT JOHN, NB, June 12, 2009 - Saint John Sea Dogs Director of Hockey Operations Mike Kelly quieted some doubters Friday by announcing that Fredericton, NB native Zack Phillips has signed a tryout agreement with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League team.

When the Sea Dogs traded for him with the Lewiston MAINEiacs some questioned the deal suggesting he would not showup because he was studying and playing at a New England prep school, Lawrence Academy and was expected to seek a scholarship at a NCAA university or college in the United States.

Phillips had indicated if a deal was made with the Sea Dogs and he could play closer to home he would consider it.

“Zack is a wonderful addition to our hockey club and we’re thrilled that he’s signed with us,” says Kelly. “He’s a highly-skilled offensive player who definitely has the potential to be an elite major junior forward. We’re really looking forward to having him in a Sea Dogs uniform next season.”

Phillips, 16, was acquired in a trade with the MAINEiacs this past weekend in a deal which involved multiple draft picks. Originally selected by Lewiston in the second round (34th overall) of the 2008 QMJHL Entry Draft, the 6’0”, 159 lb. centre skated with the Lawrence Spartans this past season, registering 19 goals, 29 assists for 48 points in 30 games.

Season tickets to the Sea Dogs’ 2009-10 campaign are on sale now. Information on all Sea Dogs ticketing packages – including flex, flex combo, and full season packages – can be obtained by visiting www.saintjohnseadogs.com or by calling the team office at (506) 657-DOGS (3647).
