WILDCATS SHORT CIRCUIT VOLTIGEURS FOR WIN
DRUMMONDVILLE, QC, January 23, 2010 - Moncton Wildcats scored in bunches early and late and hung on in between as the hottest team in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League won it’s ninth straight cooling off the Drummondville Voltigeurs 6-3 at the Marcel Dionne Centre in Drummondville Saturday evening.

The Wildcats sandwiched a pair of goals around one by the Voltigeurs in the first period and then added a pair late in the third including one into an empty net in the final seconds. All five goals in the first period were scored on powerplays.

Nicolas Deschamps scored two goals and Mark Barberio assisted on three to lead the way offensively for the Wildcats. David Savard, who was called on for extra duty on defence when Brandon Gormley was injured in the first period also provided a goal and an assist.

Gormley opened the scoring unassisted, with is seventh goal of the season at 2:41 on a powerplay. He left the game shortly after and never returned. Deschamps beat Voltigeurs goaltender Jake Allen of Fredericton with  his 28th of the season from Barberio and David Savard at 6:34 on another powerplay.

Gabriel Dumont put the Voltigeurs on the score board with his 31st from Jonathan Brunelle and Marc-Olivier Vachon at 10:55 on a powerplay. The Wildcats capitalized on the third five-on-three of the period with two goals. David Savard scored his ninth of season from Barberio at 13:09 and Alex Wall added his fifth from Ted Stephens and Barberio at 14:44.

The Wildcats outshot the Volts 10-8 in the period.

The Voltigeurs came back in the second period with two goals to tighten up the game. Philippe Lefebvre got things going in the period scoring his14th just 23 seconds in from Alexandre Comtois. Ondrej Palat beat Nicola Riopel with his 12th and the Voltigeurs third of the game at 11:39 from Benoît Lévesque. The Voltigeurs doubled the Wildcats 12-6 on the shot clock in the period.

The teams battled through the third period with both goaltenders coming up with key saves. As the Voltigeurs battled for the tieing goal Kelsey Tessier of the Wildcats picked off a pass and scored his 16th with help from Gabriel Bourque with 1:05 remaining on the clock. Nicolas Deschamps fired the puck into an empty net, Allen having been lifted for an extra attacker, for his 29 with one second on the clock to ice the game.

The Voltigeurs outshot the Wildcats 6-4 in the third period and 26-20 over the 60 minutes..

The Wildcats were four for seven on the powerplay while Drummondville was one for six.

Barberio was named first star, Ondrej Palat was the second star and Savard the third star.

The Wildcats now move on to Quebec City to take on the Remparts Sunday at 5:00pm AST.
