SCREAMING EAGLES OUTLAST ROCKET FOR WIN
|
CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI, February 5, 2010 - Once again Luke Adam picked up the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles and carried them on his back to victory. Adam scored two goals and assisted on another one to lead the Eagles to a 4-2 win over the hometown PEI Rocket Friday night at the Charlottetown Civic Centre.
The game was one of seven games on tap in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Friday night and one of three involving the Atlantic Division teams.
Tomas Jurco was the only shooter to score in the shootout as Saint John edged Halifax 5-4; and David Gilbert and Eric Faille scored for Acadie-Bathurst in their 2-0 shutout of Baie-Comeau in the other games involving the Atlantic Division teams.
Adam now has 12 goals in the Eagles’ last five games.
The Rocket came out of the first period with a 1-0 lead thanks to Josh Currie’s sixth of the year as he shot the puck into a wide open net 5:33 into the period as Olivier Roy was way out of position. Jonathan Bonneau and Adam Polasek assisted on the Rocket’s first shot of the game.
Cape Breton outshot PEI 14-7 in the first period.
Cape Breton tied it 9:42 into the second when Marc Bourgeios came out of the box and put the puck topshelf past Evan Mosher for his ninth of the year. The goal was unassisted.
Luke Adam assisted on Stephen Horyl’s 20th of the year with 8:44 left in the period to send Cape Breton into the third up 2-1.
Shots on goal were 14-3 in favour of Cape Breton in the second.
PEI tied the game 2-2 at 2:22 into the third as Polasek drove a bullet slapshot from the point that Roy had no chance on for his 10th of the year. Former Eagle Michael Stinziani and Samson Mahbod scored on the power play goal as the Rocket were on a five on three.
Adam scored his first of the night and 36th of the year as he put the puck through the arm of his old St. John’s Major Midget AAA teammate Mosher at the 9:20 mark with Nick MacNeil and Mathieu Brodeur lending a helping hand as Cape Breton enjoyed the extra man.
MacNeil setup Adam for the breakaway right off the faceoff as Adam went in on a breakaway on an empty net for his 37th of the year.
PEI outshot Cape Breton 17-7 in the third but were outshot 35-27 overall.
Roy improves to 24-18-0 with the win; while Mosher falls to 15-10-0 with the loss.
PEI had five chances on the power play and converted on one of them; while Cape Breton did likewise in six tries.
Adam was the first star of the game, Polasek, with a goal and an assist was the second star, and Mosher, with 31 saves, the third star.
Cape Breton improves to 31-18-2-3 and 67 points putting them into third place in the Atlantic—three ahead of PEI who falls to 29-20-2-4 and 64 points. They are in fourth.
Cape Breton’s next game is Saturday night as they travel to Halifax to take on the Mooseheads in another round of the Battle of Nova Scotia at 7:00pm AST. PEI will next play Wednesday also against Halifax at the Metro Centre for a 7:00pm AST contest.
