MOOSE UPSET EAGLES FOR BATTLE OF NS WIN

HALIFAX, NS, February 6, 2010 - With one goal and one assist each Tomas Knotek and Gerrad Grant led the Halifax Mooseheads to a 3-2 victory over the visiting Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in the latest round of the Battle of Nova Scotia Saturday night at the Metro Centre

The game was one of seven games on tap in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League  Saturday night and one of three games involving the Atlantic Division teams.

Emrik Guillemette and Steve Lebel scored in the shootout as Chicoutimi edged Acadie-Bathurst 4-3; and Saint John and Moncton wrote another chapter in the Battle of New Brunswick and Saint John gained another point in the New Brunswick Rivalry Cup as Michael Kirkpatrick, with a goal and two assists, led the Sea Dogs past  the Wildcats 5-4 in a shootout in front of an enthusiastic crowd in a sold-out Moncton Coliseum.

Grant and Travis Randell assisted on Knotek’s 20th of the year 3:22 in to give Halifax the 1-0 lead. Luke Adam evened it up with his 38th of the year with 4:59 left in the period as Morgan Ellis and Jacob Lagace lent a helping hand.Knotek assisted on Grant’s 19th of the year with 2:38 remaining to send the Mooseheads into the second period up 2-1.

Halifax outshot Cape Breton 12-8 in shots on goal in the first and 10-8 in the scoreless second.

The teams traded goals in the third as Carl Gelinas lent a helping hand on Gabriel Desjardins’ sixth of the year at the 5:49 mark to put Halifax ahead 3-1.

Brad Cuzner assisted on Jan Piskacek’s sixth of the year with 8:33 left in regulation; but it was not enough; and the Moosheads came away with their 12th win of the season.

Halifax outshot Cape Breton 15-13 in the third and 37-29 overall.

Peter Delmas improved to 19-13-0 this season with the win; while Alexandre Veronneau fell to 1-1-0 with the loss.

Neither team scored with the man advantage with Halifax having five tries and Cape Breton four.

Halifax improves to 12-37-1-4 and 29 points. They are in last place in the Atlantic Division—17 back of fifth place Acadie-Bathurst. Cape Breton falls to 31-19-2-3 and 67 points—good for third in the Atlantic and 10 back of second place Moncton.

Halifax’s next game is Wednesday night as they host PEI for a 7:00pm AST contest. Cape Breton will not play until Friday when they travel to Saint John also for a 7:00pm AST contest.
