MARLIES RELEASE NEWFOUNDLANDER DAY
|
ST. JOHN'S, NL, October 11, 2008 - The major junior hockey career of 20 year-old Josh Day, St. John’s, NL native, has been extended. Day was been released by the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League this week.
Day was signed to an amateur tryout contract by the Marlies and made the trip to St. John’s to play in the Iceberg Cup tournament at Mile One Centre last week where he played in every Marlies game.
Hockeyscene.com spoke to Day Friday night, and while he said that he is disappointed that he didn’t make the team, he said it was a great learning experience for him, and is sure that the past month will bring more options for him next year.
Day said that he will return to the OHL’s Niagara IceDogs for his final year of junior eligibility and hopes that he will have a good year. He hopes to be back in the AHL next season.
This coming season will be Josh’s fifth in the OHL. He began his junior career with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the 2004-05 season. In 2005-06 he was traded to the Mississauga IceDogs moving with the team to Niagara last season.
The 6'1, 190 pound left defenceman has played in 208 OHL regular season games scoring 10 goals and adding 77 assists along the way. In 11 playoff games over that period he has assisted on five goals.
Day was back in the lineup for Niagara’s 5-3 loss at home to the Kitchener Rangers on Thursday night. He didn’t register a point, but was even in +/- and had two penalty minutes.
