TWO ATLANTIC CANADIANS NAMED AHL ALL-STARS

SPRINGFIELD, MA, January 14, 2009 - Two Atlantic Canadians are among the players announced to be part of the Canadian All-Star team roster for the 2009 American Hockey League All-Star Classic to be played later this month at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass.
Teddy Purcell of St. John's was selected for the second straight year while Andrew MacDonald of Judique, NS was named for the first time. Purcell plays for Manchester Monarchs while MacDonald suits up with Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
The team comprises 24 players – 13 forwards, eight defencemen and three goaltenders – born in Canada. AHL fans determined the starting lineup via on-line balloting at theahl.com, while a committee of AHL coaches selected the remainder of the roster.
Among the other members of the Canadian team are 17 first-time AHL All-Stars, including the AHL’s leading goal-scorer in Chris Minard of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, the league’s top rookie scorer in Claude Giroux of the Philadelphia Phantoms and the league’s top-scoring defenceman in Johnny Boychuk of the Providence Bruins. Players on the Canadian roster with previous All-Star experience include Providence’s Martin St. Pierre, selected for his fourth consecutive All-Star Classic berth, and Houston’s Corey Locke, an All-Star in 2006 and 2008.
MacDonald was selected at the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Islanders in the 6th round (160th overall). He started his first pro season season with the Sound Tigers before he was reassigned to the Utah Grizzlies (ECHL). With the Sound Tigers, he scored five points (2g/3a) while compiling 10 penalty minutes. In Utah, he recorded 12 points (1g/11a) in 38 games. He helped the Grizzlies reach the National Conference Finals scoring 12 points (3g/9a) in 15 games. In 2006-07 he played 65 games with the Moncton Wildcats (QMJHL), he had 58 points (14g/44a) and 81 penalty minutes. In 2005-06 he was a member of the Memorial Cup host team Wildcats that went within a game of capturing the Cup. MacDonald netted 46 points (6g/40a) in 68 games. He joined the team as a free agent and worked his way up into the team’s top-three defencemen.
Purcell helped the University of Maine advance to the 2007 Frozen Four by scoring 43 points (16-27=43) in 40 games during the 2006-07 season. He finished third on the Black Bears in points and goals. His 27 assists led the team. Tied for fourth in the nation among rookies in points. Ranked fifth in the nation among freshmen with an average of 1.07 points-per-game. His points as a freshman rank 10th all-time at the university. Seventh Black Bear to be named Hockey East Rookie of the Year. Named the Inside College Hockey Rookie of the Year. Led the United States Hockey League with 52 assists during the 2005-06 season with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. Ranked second in the league with 47 assists and fourth in the league with 67 points during the 2004-05 season. Named to the USHL All-Star second team in 2004-05 and 2005-06 season. Signed with the Kings as an unrestricted free agent on April 27, 2007.
