Back to News BUFFALO SABRES SIGN DIPENTA TO ONE-YEAR DEAL BUFFALO, NY, July 13, 2009 - Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier has announced the NHL team has agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent defenceman Joe DiPenta on a one-year contract. Dipenta is a product of the Cole Harbour minor hockey system and the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. After eight professional seasons in the Philadelphia Flyers, Atlanta Thrashers, Vancouver Canucks and Anaheim Ducks organizations 30 year-old DiPenta, who stands 6’2” and weighs 199 lbs. collected six points (1+5) in 47 games with Frolunda of the Swedish Elite League last season.  Born in Barrie, Ontario his family moved to the Maritimes when he was a year-old., DiPenta has appeared in 174 NHL games, collecting 23 points (6+17) and 110 penalty minutes with Atlanta and Anaheim. DiPenta was a member of the 2007 Stanley Cup Champion Anaheim Ducks team. DiPenta has also appeared in 369 games in the American Hockey League with Philadelphia, Chicago and Manitoba picking up 53 points (9+44) and 411 penalty minutes. DiPenta was selected in the third round (61st overall) by the Florida Panthers in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft while playing at Boston College but never signed with the Panthers. He signed his first pro contract after the 2000 season when heplayed with the Mooseheads.in their Memorial Cup season.
