FIVE ATLANTIC CANADIANS OPT FOR OHA
|
MONCTON, NB, July 22, 2008 - Five players from around Atlantic Canada won’t be returning to their teams this coming season instead they will be playing hockey at one of the newest hockey prep schools in Cornwall Ontario this fall.
Following an appearance at the Andrews Hockey Growth Program’s Atlantic Hockey Showcase earlier this month, Josh Perley,17, of the Tobique First Nation, who played high school hockey this past season has been invited to continue both his education and hockey at Ontario Hockey Academy which combines a 60 game hockey schedule with a strong academic program.
In an interview with the director of hockey at the development school, Giles Lascelle said there may be others from the Atlantic Provinces joining the school come September but so far they have a list of five.
Bryan Warner, who played with the Moncton Flyers this past season is one of them. He will be joining Perley, Jean and Pierre Leforth who played with Notre Dame Hounds last year and Ryan McMullin. All five were recruited at the Showcase.
In all the Academy will have two boys teams and a girls team that will play at various tournaments and events in the United States and Canada throughout the fall and winter. The teams will also play in a Junior B league in the area to go along with their five hours of instructional ice time each week.
Head coach Rick Lalonde said they have registrations from seven different countries and will soon be at their maximum although they are still talking to at least three players from Atlantic Canada. They hope to finalize some decisions during the Team Atlantic Summer Evaluation Camp being held in Wolfville, NS this week.
Perley will also be heading to New Hampshire and Boston next week to play in the Boston Challenge Cup as a member of the HOA Hockey Program from Halifax,NS.
