HOA TAKES TWO TEAMS TO HIGH SCOUTED TOURNEY
|
MARLBORO, MA, July 27, 2008 - Two teams from the Halifax based HOA group with several players from Atlantic Canada in their lineups participated this weekend in the Eastern Hockey Summer Showcase at the New England Sports Center in Marlboro, MA.
Both teams, the Flyers and the Bullets made it through to the playoff round and ended up meeting each other Sunday morning. The Bullets won 3-2 on goals by Doug Burns, Art Lifschutz and Jordan Scott. Nick Gouthro and KC Brown scored for the Flyers. The Bullets were later eliminated 4-0 by the South Jersey Red.
The Eastern Showcase is one of the most highly scouted tournaments of the summer with over 100 scouts from all levels in attendance from the NHL, pro leagues, major junior NCAA division 1 and division 3 colleges and universities as well as many junior A teams and prep schools. It bills itself as "the premier 20 & under hockey event in the east".
The HOA junior teams got off to a big start Friday. The HOA Flyers coached by Shawn Evans of the Truro Junior A Bearcats built a commanding lead on the way to a 7-3 drubbing of the Green Mountain Glades. The Flyers were led by Truro Bearcat KC Brown with a pair of goals and Amherst Rambler Lee Chuck Denny with a goal and assist. Also with three helpers was Nick Gouthro of the Cape Breton Tradesmen.
Robbie Veriker of the Miramichi Timberwolves and Anton Manson of the Bridgewater Lumberjacks took the opportunity to shine before the scouts with five point games for the HOA Bullets coached by longtime junior and player development coach Tony Syrett of Quebec.
The Bullets were in full control from the opening whistle of their first game with a 9-2 victory over the South Shore Kings.
In the late game of the day the HOA Bullets met the Bridgewater Bandits handing the Bandits a 10-1 defeat. The Bullets were led by Tanner Manson with a hat trick and two helpers. Doug Burns from the Bridgewater Lumberjacks also added a hat trick
The winning ways continued on Saturday with the HOA Flyers starting the day witha 4-0 win over Capital District led by Dawson Campbell of the Moncton Midget Flyers with two goals and and assist
The HOA Bullets game against the Wildcats saw a steady stream of Bullet players to the penality box but during the few times they were able to play 5 on 5 hockey they scored three times for a 3-0 victory. The penalty units played extremely well backstopped by a stellar performance in net from Alex Scola.The scoring was handled by Jordan Scott with a goal and two assists.
The late game Saturday saw a hard fought battle as the Flyers handed the Valley a 4-3 loss.
Both teams won their respective division but unfortunately ended up meeting each other in the crossovers Sunday morning.
